A CPA said something to me once that I've never gotten over.We were talking about her firm why it wasn't growing, why she sounded like every other accountant in the county and somewhere in the middle of it, almost as an aside, she said:
"Over the years, the numbers tell the story."
She grew up in it. Both her parents were CPAs. Numbers weren't a subject she studied they were what got talked about at the dinner table. She'd been reading them the way other people read faces since she was a kid.
She said that sentence like it was nothing. Like it was just how the world worked.
That sentence is her entire brand, and she didn't know it. She'd spent twenty minutes telling me she was "detail-oriented" and "good with clients" the two most forgettable things an accountant can say about herself and then she told me the truth by accident.
That happens to me constantly.
An electrician spent forty minutes explaining how a house wired before 1970 is a completely different animal from one wired today. What he was actually telling me was that he reads buildings. He can walk into a basement and know when it was built and what somebody did to it since.
That's not a service. That's a story. And it's the reason a homeowner should call him instead of the other guy.
He didn't hear it. He thought he was making small talk.
Founders know their story. They just don't know it's a story.
